Friday Sep 13, 2013
Friday Sep 13, 2013
In this weeks episode Sean sits down to chat with Hugo award winning fan writer and author, Dr Tansy Rayner Roberts. Long time listeners will no doubt remember Tansy as one of the founders of Galactic Chat (her voice still graces the intro) and it was an absolute pleasure to have her on the other side of the microphone.
In this extended interview they talk about the recent Hugo win, if the category Fan Writer really is applicable and a bit about the ups and downs of her career. So if winning the Hugo was the first you had heard about Dr Roberts then, put the car into overdrive, or the treadmill on incline and enjoy a good hour Speculative Fiction fun.

Galactic Chat 29 - Narrelle Harris
Friday Sep 06, 2013
Friday Sep 06, 2013
This week Alex Pierce interviews the ebullient Narrelle Harris, author, app content provider and mutlimedia maverick. In this interview they talk briefly about Narelle's work on her two apps - Melbourne Literary and Melbourne Peculiar . The majority of the interview, however, covers Narrelle's latest project Kitty and Cadaver a multimedia storytelling experience featuring original music, a weekly release chapter of the novel with jewelry, art and comic to come.
Melbourne is a long way from Hungary: a long way from vampire nests and battles against the forces of darkness and the inevitable losses incurred in such battles.
That’s why the surviving members of Rome Burning have fled to this far flung city. They need to rest and recuperate, a long way from the battle they only barely won, and the people they lost while winning it.
Of course, when your job is to fight monsters with music, your work is never really done. Melbourne’s dead are going to see to that.
Kitty Carrasco is a beautician. She works at a funeral home, preparing the dead for their final farewell with family and friends.
One very unusual day, her dead clients sit up and take a bit too much interest in her. It’s unexpected, but Kitty is nothing if not accepting of life’s little foibles. Instead of panicking, she sings to them, like she usually does while working.
Luckily, the dead seem to like this, and listen instead of doing anything more aggressive. Like trying to eat her brains.
And when a couple of musicians show up with remarkably good timing, wanting to know more about her Song for the Dead and telling her they’ve got a mission for her, Kitty is more than intrigued. She’s totally on board for whatever adventures are coming next.
But this band’s last adventure ended up with two dead band members, which is why they need a new lead singer. Is Kitty going to get the hang of this singing magic before what seems to be the Zombie Apocalypse devours Melbourne? And are the band members ever going to stop fighting long enough to save the world?

Galactic Chat 28 - Jason Nahrung
Friday Aug 30, 2013
Friday Aug 30, 2013
In this episode we Skype in Jason Nahrung, a man who has been called one of the nicest people in the Australian speculative fiction scene, while writing some of its most disturbing fiction.
A penetrating cross-examination ensues on topics far and wide, including his award winning novella Salvage, his award nominated novel Blood and Dust, what it takes to write on the Melbourne public transport network, whether the modern vampire can be re-fanged, the impact of journalistic skills on self editing and what listeners should read if they want to dip their toe in the horror wading pool.
All this plus the answer to a question that has haunted your interviewer for years - what exactly is a 'gothic sensibility'?
Jason also does a reading from his latest novel Blood and Dust, where listeners will learn slightly too much about how vampire lovin' and vegemite can go together.
Jason's excellent website, www.jasonnahrung.com, is mentioned at the end of the podcast.
Blood and Dust can be found at the Xoum website Blood and Dust
Salvage can be found at the Twelfth Planet Press website

Friday Aug 23, 2013
In this episode we introduce interviewer Mark Webb who grabs hold of writer, publisher, editor, podcaster and speculative fiction raconteur Keith Stevenson and quizzes him about his wide and varied speculative fiction career. They cover some history around Coeur de Lion publishing and what makes a Coeur de Lion publication, Keith's recently announced Dimension 6 speculative fiction e-magazine initiative, his latest writing projects and the fragmentation of the publishing world that has accompanied the eBook revolution.
Keith also does a reading from his time travel paradox short story '…They First Make Mad.' to round out the interview.
More information about coeur de lion publishing, including details on where to purchase the books mentioned in the podcast, can be found at http://www.coeurdelion.com.au. More information about Dimension 6 can also be found at the website.
If listeners want to hear the end of '…They First Make Mad', they can hear the whole story, plus stories by Brendan Duffy and Trent Jamieson, on the Terror Incognita Speculative Fiction podcast episode 14 at http://www.keithstevenson.com/terraincognitasf/tisf014.html.
Note: there was a bit of background noise at the venue, and Mark's recording equipment wasn't quite good enough to screen it all out. Listeners should pretend they are sitting at a trendy café, eavesdropping on two sophisticated writer types talking shop. In fact, it is compulsory to be drinking a macchiato while listening to this podcast. You've been warned.

Friday Aug 09, 2013
This week Sean recovers from the depths of his crashed hard drive, this wonderful interview with Dr Gillian Polack, novelist, lecturer, editor, medievalist, food & culture historian and failed Morris dancer. Due to the fact that Dr Polack lives in our national capital and nobody really wants to talk to Australian politicians, we were at the mercy of our nation's ancient telecom infrastructure.
In this wide ranging conversational interview they discuss Dr Polack's, two novels, her short story career, editing the acclaimed anthology Baggage and surviving as a writer in the current marketplace. There's also mention of her yet to be released joint project - a sourcebook for writers on the Middle Ages.
WARNING: Sean and Dr Polack discuss Morris Dancing, if you find Morris Dancing or Dancers objectionable you may be offended :).
